Nathalie's video project:

The subject of my video performance is identity and to be more specific the loss of identity. At first, I face the camera and paint my face with the three colors of the German flag: black, red and gold. My intention is to show the national identity. By over painting my complete face with black paint I am trying to erase this identity and at the same time create a new one. This new identity is not defined by a country or a state and at the same time it is not “blank” either. I chose the color black to indicate that identity is not connected with race (or class or gender…).

To sum up, ones identity cannot be generalized or defined by outer circumstances, it is an inner attitude and feeling that is truly individual.

Jason's Proformance

In this video project, I wanted to focus on different angles. The video that I believe best demonstrates this is the one I did about blank.  I wanted to see what it would be like to have it running the entire time, even when I was setting it up. I tried to focus less on sound and more on the performance which was extremely exaggerated. This short film involving few proposes allowed for people to be more focused on me. The film is shot as though you are watching me as a monkey play in a tree and just being ridiculous. I also worked on the idea of not moving the camera and working with in the “frame” , this allowed me to disappear and added to my performance, especially when i fell from the tree. To sum up, my work is not focusing on the performance but on the interaction between the performer and the medium.

Ned Pressman video assignment

Earning your drivers license is a right of passage for many people. The day someone gains their license is a huge day in there lives. This video is meant to show how driving is so important to daily life, yet such a simple idea. As I drove through campus I passed many people walking to class or their various other commitments. For the people walking between classes the sense of distance is drastically different from mine in the car. Where it takes 5+ minutes to walk from JPR to Saga in the morning it takes less than 2 to drive. The lack of transportation can be the defining point of someones lives this video shows how something as simple as a car, and a drivers license can change so much in someone's life.

Frank Lawrence's Performance Project

A conversation, by nature, is two sided.  Most conversations are viewed from the outside with someone physically hearing and seeing all parties.  The obvious exceptions being telephone conversations, conversations taking place through thin walls, etc.  Yet, whenever we see a conversation in person but not both parties are visible, it seems odd.  I involved confusion and frustration in the conversation I had with my friends in the common room because the emotions felt by the two girls not in the shot simply have to be speculated by the exasperation in their voice and not in the physical cues we often look for.  I wanted to examine how easily it would be to figure out exactly what the two other characters in the conversation were feeling solely through their voice.  Also, I figured it would be interesting to see whether or not the viewer of the film felt uncomfortable or awkward simply because they’re not used to seeing one side of a conversation in person.  I wanted to leave the viewer with a sense of want for the two other girls in the video to enter the shot.
