Group sound project proposal

group:
Jason Ramond, Olikoye Akanle, Nathalie Werner

location:
Houghton House bathroom

visuals:
small sign at the way out, so that visitors do not see it before they experienced our piece

concept:
We worked with the concept of bringing life to the bathroom. Usually, the bathroom is a private and quiet place. We have four sounds that are related to water and one voice that comes out of nowhere and is speaking directly to the visitor of the bathroom. Our water sounds increase from a quiet simple dripping sound to the loud enormous sound of the Niagara Falls. The basic idea is to make people aware of their environment and make them think about everyday routines, like going to the bathroom, by surprising them.  This gives people the opportunity to think about their concept of art as something that is normally defined and showed in certain places and at the same time think about their concept of every day life by distracting them from their normal routines.
We want to force people to step out of their comfort-zone and think outside the box. By placing this piece in the bathroom we basically transfer "art", which is usually found in a museum, to a private place and make it (forcefully) available for everyone.
