Introduction to Video

The Introduction of Time and Motion In 2-D Space

This is one of the most concise descriptions of the state of video art that I've read in a long time. Please read the blog post/article and answer this question:

--How has time altered the way we view art?

--Using one of the images or videos shown in the article or another video that we have seen in class, describe how the element of time is important to the viewer's experience of the work.

  1. Time is a very interesting aspect of art. It plays a huge role in the way that one sees art and the opinion or feeling they have about the artwork. If someone really loves a piece of art works they could stare at it for a significant amount of time and never grow sick of it and every time they see the artwork they will see something different and exciting about a particular piece. This aspect of time is what makes video art interesting because the viewer does not have as much of a choice as to how much time one watches a piece of artwork. The artist that created the video has the power to draw you in and steal your time for the duration of the film. One piece that we watched in class that stood out for me was the Marina Abramovic’s piece where she is talking about her life and her artistic process while the camera is moving inward and outward. The video was long and in order to understand the piece you needed to watch the entire film. She was able to force you to watch the piece for a certain amount of time.

  2. The use of video as an art medium allows the artist to manipulate the viewer. First by controlling the amount of time that a viewer must look at the work. And second through use of images, as well as sound, which can strongly manipulate the reaction of the viewer. By using video, the artist has more or less the viewer's undivided attention. The video, by Marina Abromovic, which shows her brushing her hair and chanting "Art must be beautiful, Artist must be beautiful", is captivating simply because the motions of her brushing her hair and chanting varies in intensity. Some times she is almost quiet and other times she is violent. This keeps the viewer intrigued because they want to see what she does next, even though she continues to chant the same thing over and over and keeps on brushing her hair. The use of time in a work of art is important because it is a tool to control the viewer, show the different nuances in a simple theme, and show progress and how something may evolve.
