The space I am
creating with this piece is the church. I recorded the sounds in places that
have nothing to do with church and tried to design a surrounding that is as
close to church as it can get without actually being in a church. By using this strategy, I intended to make
people think about religion, their concept of this institution and most
importantly about their faith. I reconstructed this place with elements of
everyday-life to force the listener to think about the whole concept of church
and to question themselves if “church” might be rather a state of mind than an
actual building. One can be close to ones good in their everyday-life although
one is not in a church.
I started my piece by
opening a squeaky door and steps walking away. I tried to imitate the sound of
boots walking in a church, because it is a very interesting way to experience
the body in space. The echo that is created implies a human being walking
through this kind of space. The voices in the background belong to a group of
visitors in a museum with a Spanish speaking tour guide in Puerto Rico that I
recorded during Fall Break. I also blended in quiet background noises like
sneezing, coughing, browsing of books, rustling of jackets and chairs moving
and clearing your throat. The only sound that I downloaded online is the choir
that is singing in the end.
To sum up, my
intention was to recreate the abstract space “church” as a personal and private
location and to give people the opportunity to build their own religious space
within their thoughts and minds.
